When we talk about "a world of wine in 40 miles", we are talking about a unique
40 mile stretch of an appellation that makes a huge transition, swooping from
alpine Underwood Mountain in the west out to the Gorge's eastern desert. An
extraordinary combination of climates, soil and geology along with longitudes shared
with some of the the finest wine growing regions of Europe; there seems to be
hardly a grape these vineyards cannot grow well.
